United Airlines, simply called United, is a major American airline based in Chicago, Illinois that operates out of nine airline hubs in the continental United States, Guam, and Japan. Previously owned by The Boeing Company, one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers, United is now a wholly owned subsidiary of United Continental Holdings following a $3 billion merger in 2010. The company employs over 88,500 people in its headquarters in Willis Tower, previously known as Sears Tower , and is publicly traded under NYSE: UAL with a market capitalisation of over $10.5 billion as of October 2013.

Since it started operations on June 30, 1927 as Boeing Air Transport (later on named United Air Lines on March 28, 1931), the airline now has the world’s most comprehensive route network under its sleeve, having had served a total of 374 airport destinations in 59 countries. In 2013, it registered 139 million transported passengers to their respective destinations. Its main competitors in the domestic market are Delta Air Lines and American Airlines.
