Thai Airways, the flag carrier of Thailand, started its operations in 1959 and is based at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok. It is a full-service airline and operates flights to over 80 destinations in 34 countries across Asia, Oceania, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Thai Airways, or more commonly referred to as Thai, has a frequent flyer program for its loyal passengers, the Royal Orchid Plus. The airline is a founding member of Star Alliance, and it also has codeshare agreements with 22 other carriers.

Why Fly with Thai Airways

Check In

Thai Airways offers several convenient options for checking in. Besides airport counter check-in, passengers can do internet check-in through the airline's official website or through its mobile app. With internet check-in, you can select your seats, update frequent flyer miles, and print your boarding pass ahead of your flight. Mobile boarding passes, however, are currently only accepted for flights departing from Bangkok. Another way to save time and avoid queues at the airport is to use the self-service check-in kiosks. These kiosks are available at selected airports.

Payment Methods

Thai Airways accepts payment by credit card — Visa and MasterCard, for all flights. Other credit cards may also be used in selected departure cities. For tickets bought in Thailand, other payment options are bank direct debit, over-the-counter, and also payment by bank ATM. Payment can also be made through Alipay, PayPal, and other third-party payment platforms.


With its fleet of 82 Airbus and Boeing planes, Thai Airways offers comfortable seats and generous legroom in all cabin classes. Royal First Class passengers on its A380-800 and B747 aircraft, will enjoy a semi-private suite that has a plush leather seat that reclines into a lie-flat bed. The Royal Silk Class cabins also have comfortable angled seats or lie-flat beds, depending on the aircraft. The Economy cabin is also equipped with 18-inch wide reclining seats that have a personal in-seat touch screen monitor. Passengers on international flights can reserve seats at the time of booking or through the travel agent. However, for domestic flights, seat selection can only be done 24hrs before the flight using the internet check-in service.

Baggage Allowance

Baggage allowance for passengers depends on the flight route and cabin class. For international flights, Thai Royal First Class passengers will have 50 kg baggage allowance. Those travelling on Thai Royal Silk Class and Premium Economy Class are allowed to check in 40 kg, while Economy Class passengers can check-in 30 kg of baggage. Economy Class passengers with the booking code L is allowed to check-in only 20 kg. Infants have complimentary baggage allowance of 10 kg. Extra baggage allowance is also given to passengers with selected membership status on Star Alliance and Royal Orchid Platinum.

In-Flight Services

As a full-service airline, Thai Airways offers complimentary meals and a selection of beverages including soft drinks, juices, and alcohol on board all flights. All flights also offer a wide range of entertainment options, from the latest movies, music, and games, to a variety of newspapers, and its inflight magazine, Sawasdee.
