Located at the capital city of Tamil Nadu, India, Chennai International Airport (IATA: MAA) is the fourth busiest international airport in India after Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. It is located around 25 minutes from the city center of Chennai.

The airport is known as the first airport to have both domestic and international terminals in India. It is also the first airport in India to receive ISO 9001 – 2000 certification. The passenger terminals in Chennai International Airport are served by Terminal 1 (Kamaraj), Terminal 3 (Anna), and Terminal 4, while Terminal 2 is exclusively used for cargo arrivals and departures. The Kamaraj hosts for domestic flights to more than 20 destinations within India.

The Anna or Terminal 3 only hosts for international arrivals, while the international departure is served at Terminal 4. Terminal 1 and 3 is located on the same complex. To transfer to Terminal 4, you can get on the moving walkway.


It is easy to get in and out the Chennai International Airport because it is integrated with several public transportations to the city as well as more personal options like online taxis and car hire. First is the Chennai Metro train which runs between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM every 10 – 20 minutes. There are plenty of transportation options available around the airport.

Want to get a more local experience? Walk outside the terminal building and find the Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus. The 18A bus will take you directly to the city for a lower fare than the train or taxi.

Another option should be online or prepaid taxi. Ola and Uber are app-based taxis that provide a booking kiosk right at the arrival gate. Passengers who arrive from their Chennai International Airport flights and do not have the application on hand can book a car at the provided kiosks.
