South African Airways is the national flag carrier and largest airline of South Africa, headquartered in the Airways Park of the OR Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park. The airline flies to 38 destinations worldwide from its hub in Johannesburg, using a fleet of 60 aircraft. South African Airways was founded in 1934 upon the acquisition of Union Airways by the South African government. The airline was initially overseen and controlled by South African Railways and Harbours Administration, before it was completely overhauled in 1997. During the major overhaul program, the airline underwent a change in image, name, and aircraft livery, and has established online ticketing services that were carried out by the company's board. In 2006, South African Airways have separated from its mother company Transnet, overtaking it and operating as an independent airline.

Using the slogan “Africa's Most Awarded Airline”, South African Airways have dominated the aviation scene in the continent, ultimately becoming one of the more trusted airlines in the country and in the world. Its subsidiary, low-cost Mango Airlines, provide regional and domestic flights at a low price. SAA is the official airline of the Association of Tennis Professionals, and has established links with Airlink, South African Express, Etihad, and many others. It currently operates as a member of the Star Alliance.

How to Check In

Apart from the physical check-in counters positioned within the airport, South African Airways also provides other options to skip the queues and check-in fast. The airline have recently introduced mobile check-in capabilities through their mobile site and designated apps. Here, travellers may not only check-in, but they could also review their booking information, access flight timetables and check upcoming flights, check updated status of any South African Airways flights, view information on featured South African Airways destinations, see the status of checked-in luggage, and track any cargo that travellers have entrusted with South African Airways. Further, South African Airways also offers online-check in using their website, www.flysaa.com. For online check-in, kindly print the provided boarding passes. For mobile app/mobile check-in users, download, screen capture, or save the mobile boarding pass that will be provided. Note that for each option, there are designated times as to when the check-in service will be opened. This is usually depending on the destination. A 'premium check-in' service is also available for business class and instant upgrade passengers.

Baggage Allowance & Fees

South African Airways provides its passengers various free baggage allowances, depending on the seat classes. Generally for hand baggage allowance, travellers who are flying in economy class are allowed one piece of luggage not exceeding eight kilograms. Travellers who are under business class meanwhile, are allowed two pieces of luggage not exceeding eight kilograms each. All hand baggage should not exceed the set dimensions of 56 x 36 x 23 centimetres. Apart from the hand baggage, travellers are also entitled to free checked baggage allowances, depending on the distance of the flight and the seat class. For domestic flights and international flights between Africa, New Zealand, and the UK (except for flights from Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe), economy class travellers are allowed one piece of luggage with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms, while business class travellers are allowed one piece of luggage with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms. For international flights to the United States, Canada, Australia, Middle East (code-sharing flights), and the rest of Asia, economy class travellers are allowed two pieces of luggage with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms each, while business class travellers are allowed two pieces of luggage with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms each. Note that these free allowances are subject to the airline's rules and regulations, and anything in excess will be charged accordingly.

Seating

Seat classes for South African Airways vary depending on the destination and preference of the passenger. There are at least six classes offered by the airline. These are called economy saver, economy plus, economy select, instant upgrade, priority business, and premium business class. All classes are to be served on-board meals and are allowed free and generous baggage allowances. However, each will have different provisions regarding changes in booking, refundability, premium check-in and boarding facilities, booking classes, seat selection, booking classes, and voyager miles upgrade.

Inflight Services

South African Airways offer various inflight services and programs for all its passengers. Apart from the airport lounges available upon arrival and before departure (within the airports), travellers are to be treated with great food, wine, and other beverages upon boarding flights. They are also allowed to try the on-board shopping provisions, as well as to enjoy the inflight magazine Sawubona, and other inflight entertainment options.
