Best Time to Visit Colombo

Colombo enjoys a humid and hot tropical climate throughout the year but experiences 2 monsoon seasons as well. The first one, called the Yala monsoon, takes place from May to August whilst the second Maha monsoon occurs from October to January. As such, tourists are advised to visit the city in the months of January to April as well as September, as rain is a lot less likely during these periods. An especially good month to visit is January - besides enjoying good weather, you’ll also be able to observe the Buddhist Duruthu Perahera Festival and procession taking place.

Things to do in Colombo

If you’re in Colombo don’t miss a visit to the iconic Galle Face, one of the city’s most popular tourist attractions. An idyllic waterfront promenade facing the Indian Ocean, the Galle Face used to be a horse-racing track and a golf course but has since been converted into a public park offering an oasis of tranquility in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city’s financial district. Besides being a haven of peace, the Galle Face is also an excellent place for a stroll, picnic or evening run with fresh air and gently lapping waves for company.

Next, be sure to make time for the 120-year-old Gangaramaya Temple. Situated by the side of the Beiru Lake, the Gangaramaya Temple is of great significance to the Sri Lankan as it serves as both a place of worship and a religious training institute which had, in its past, produced renowned scholars such as Ratmalana Sri Dharmarama Thero, Waskaduwa Sri Subhuti Thero.
