Cheap flights from Laos

The Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR, more simply known as Laos) is a landlocked country bordering Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar in Southeast Asia. Its landscape is dominated by mountains and flowing rivers (including the great Mekong river) which accounts for much of the country’s development, by its production of hydroelectricity that can be sold to Laos’ neighbours. Though considered one of Southeast Asia’s poorest countries, the Lao people are known for their relaxed and laid-back attitudes toward life as well as their non-participance in the rat race for wealth and power that dominates much of the modern world nowadays. Their peaceful ways of life are a breath of fresh air and the unspoilt beauty of the country further adds to the otherworldly feeling of having been plucked out of reality and placed in a different land where time stands still.

Laos’ climate is typical of Southeast Asia - mostly tropical, with warm temperatures and high humidities as well as the yearly rainy season. The country has a population of around 6 million, which comprises a variety of ethnic groups and indigenous tribes. The official language of the country is Lao, and the official religion is Buddhism.

When a country wins the award for World’s Best Tourist Destination 2013 (by the European Council on Tourism and Trade) as well as the Favorite Cultural Destination award, you know its something special. And Laos, most definitely, fits the bill. If in this exotic land don’t miss a visit to Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995 and one of Laos’ top tourist attractions. A small town surrounded by mountains in the northern part of the country, Luang Prabang was once the capital of the Lan Xang Kingdom and sports ancient architecture in the form of royal palaces, more than 30 temples (known as Wats) and old French villas. On top of that it also boasts unspoilt natural beauty, with the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers, Kuang Si Falls, Tat Sae Waterfalls, ancient caves and elephant rides on the activity menu for tourists.

For a vacation out of Laos, how about an hour-long flight to Vietnam’s famed Saigon, now called Ho Chi Minh City? Known as the ‘Diamond of the Far East’, Ho Chi Minh is a real treat for the eyes with its interesting architectural fusion; you’d see traditional Chinese-style pagodas juxtaposed next to Western architecture like wide tree-lined boulevards and French villas. The most populated city in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh boasts a skyline of modern skyscrapers but keeps its long history carefully preserved in historic buildings like the Reunification Palace, a great iconic landmark and reminder of the bitter wars between Western colonial powers that once took place on Vietnamese soil.

But if beatific natural scenery is what you’re after, grab a long-haul flight to spellbinding Interlaken, a gorgeous town and the sports capital of Switzerland.
