Where to go
Kinshasa, formerly known as Leopoldville, is the capital and the largest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Once a site of fishing villages, Kinshasa is now an urban area with a population of over nine million, as of 2013. It faces the capital of the neighbouring Republic of the Congo, Brazzaville, which can be seen across the wide Congo River. Kinshasa is also the third largest urban area in Africa next to Cairo and Lagos, and the second largest “francophone” urban area in the world after Paris, with French being the language of government, schools, newspapers, public services, and high-end commerce in the city. Within the city, travellers may visit the University of Kinshasa, the People's Palace, the Tower of Limete, the Kinshasa Museum, the Kinshasa Fine Arts Academy, and the Kinshasa central market. Travellers may also embark on a journey along the Congo River, which connects the two Congos of Africa.
Goma is a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is the capital of the North Kivu province, and has been a historically important site due to it being the refuge of more than one million Rwandans after the monstrosity that is the Rwandan Genocide. It is also one of the main war zones during the First and the Second Congo Wars, and has seen more bloodshed in the last few decades as compared to other cities in the country. On a lighter note, Goma is located in the northern shore of the beautiful Lake Kivu, one of the more important lakes in the region.
There are no short haul flights from Bangoka International Airport in Kisangani. All flights from the said airport are domestic of nature, and travellers who are looking for these types of flights are advised to go to the bigger international airports in the country.
Likewise, long haul flights are currently unavailable from Bangoka International Airport or from any of the airports within the country. Even the major N'Djili International Airport does not have these types of flights, so travellers who are looking into travelling long haul should check out possible flight connections from nearby countries instead. The best bet would be Africa’s busiest airport, O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, South Africa. It is one of the very few airports in the world that serves all continents except Antarctica.
