Mataram is the capital of Lombok as well as West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) province in Indonesia. It is a conglomeration of three other towns -- Ampenan, Mataram and Cakranegara. Being the centre of government administration, Mataram offers impressive public buildings and substantial houses. Many travellers use Mataram as a base for visiting other neigbouring destinations such as Bali, Mount Ranjani and the principal beach resort in Senggigi just a stone’s throw away. If you’re interested in exploring Mataram’s cultural past, hire a taxi to Pura Meru. This temple is the largest and second most important Hindu temple in Lombok. Built in 1702, be amazed at the shrines and temples dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Do visit Po Hwa Kong, a Chinese Buddhist temple built in 1806. Be intrigued by the classical Chinese architecture of the temple which features dragon, gods and lotus flowers.

Eating is a quintessential pastime in this city. Available at any time of the day and always fresh, dishes such as ayam taliwang and ayam penyet can be found for a dollar or maybe two on every corner of the street. There are a large variety of restaurants, eating houses and warungs where visitors can sit at while people-watching. Stop at Jalan Udayana when you’re on your way to the city from the airport. This area is a popular eating destination for families and couples.

Since you’re new to the city, it is advisable to go on guided shopping tours around the markets and backstreets of Mataram. Get ready to pass through labyrinths of stalls selling literally everything from motorbike parts to bric-a-brac antiques to clothes. Do remember to haggle for a lower price and always smile at the sellers.
