Flights from Rostock

The Rostock-Laage Airport, often called simply as the Rostock Airport, is a public and military airport located in Rostock, the largest city in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It is named too after Laage, a town in the Rostock district where it is situated. The airport serves flights to major cities throughout Germany as well as some leisure routes. In addition to civil activity, the Jagdgeschwader 73 of the Luftwaffe is also stationed on the military side of the airport.

The airport was created in 1979 as a National People's Army facility. It was opened in 1984 with the Fighter Wing JBG 77 and the Navy Fighter Wing 28 as its maiden landings. It was deactivated in 1990, and again was reactivated in 1993 when the Jagdgeschwader 73 was stationed here. In the same year, it was decided that civilian activities will be allowed on a 60-hectare section of the airport. From then on, many difficulties were faced by the airport. They have posted at least 2.8 million euros for 2013, while passenger numbers were decreasing steadily. As the government of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is not willing to subsidise any of the services or the facility, it is perceived that the airport will file for bankruptcy in the future if this trend will continue.

Facilities for the airport consist of one modern passenger terminal building containing a large check-in hall, as well as some shops and restaurants. The building is equipped with two aircraft stands with jet bridges, as well as some wall-boarding stands. The airport can handle mid-sized aircraft, and also features several stands for smaller general aviation planes.

Where to go

Cologne is Germany's fourth largest city after Berlin, Hamburg, and Munich. It is the largest city of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with more than ten million inhabitants. It was established in the first century AD as the Roman Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium in Ubii territory, and was the capital of the Roman province of Germania Inferior, before it was occupied by Franks in 462. Today, Cologne is a major cultural centre for the Rhineland; home to more than thirty museums and hundreds of galleries, and a living and breathing city that is both Romanesque and German. When visiting Cologne, make sure to drop by the Cologne Cathedral, the Great St. Martin Church, the Colonius TV Tower, the Cologne City Hall, the Overstolzenhaus, a few medieval city gates which has maintained its original structure since their creation, the Cologne Ring for its night life, and the Schildergasse for shopping.

Munich is the capital and the largest city in the state of Bavaria. It has a population of around 5.6 million people (metropolitan region), and has always been one of the major destinations in Germany. The name of the city is derived from the Old High German term Munichen, which means “by the monks”, derived from the Benedictine order who ran a monastery at the place that is now called the Old Town of Munich. It was also the seat of the Bavarian Dukes, and the host city of the 1972 Summer Olympics. When in Munich, sample the delicacies, take part in the famous Oktoberfest, taste the “best beers” in the famous Hofbrauhaus am Platzl, and visit the National Theatre that has graced many prominent composers.
