Penang International Airport is a small airport that connects to major gateways in the region with access to limited destinations via a direct flight - the furthest destination by flight time is Wuhan in China. If you do want to get somewhere further from the airport, fret not because Skyscanner will plough through hundreds of relevant results and prices to find you the cheapest and more convenient flight segments that will take you there. You can then filter through results by selecting your preferred arrival and departure time, the number of stopovers and even airline alliance to finetune the results to find that perfect flight for you.
What options are available?
The Penang International Airport is located approximately 16km away from the city centre and it is easily accessible via taxi and bus. It should take roughly 45 minutes to get from the city to the airport but more time should be allocated during the peak hours as traffic can get quite heavy coming from the city.
There is a good selection of full-fare and low-cost carriers at the Penang International Airport with most long-haul flights stopping over in Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. If you wish to travel to another Malaysian city, the extensive flight network coverage by Firefly and AirAsia will probably be able to take you there directly. Otherwise, Malaysia Airlines will open up a range of travel destinations once you connect at the major international hub in Kuala Lumpur.
Where are the popular places to go?
Since the Penang International Airport is located towards the northern end of Malaysia, it is incredibly easy to visit the surrounding cities nearby - Bangkok is under 2 hours away on the plane so if you are craving for a good Thai food fix or if you simply wish to indulge in a little shopping at the Chatuchak weekend market, it is only a short ride away. Alternatively, if you wish to take markets to a whole new level, heading down to Taipei on China Airlines should take you there in approximately 4 hours. If you are craving for a beach getaway without wanting to go too far, Langkawi is only a short 30 minutes flight away and it is easily accessible via Firefly or AirAsia.
