Hokkaido is the second largest island in Japan. It has a very strong historical value, especially on matters relating to the history of the expansion of the Japanese feudal state in the 17th century.

One iconic landmark in Hokkaido is the Odori Park. The 1.5 square kilometre park was dubbed the "heart of Sapporo" because of its strategic location. There are various seasonal festivals held every year in this park. Currently, there are nine international airports serving Hokkaido, namely Sapporo Chitose Airport, Hakodate Airport, Asahikawa Airport, Kushiro Airport, Obihiro Airport, Memanbetsu Airport, Nakashibetsu Airport, Monbetsu Airport, and Rishiri Airport.

Sapporo Chitose Airport (CTS)

There are a lot of options to access Sapporo Chitose Airport from Hokkaido and vice versa. You can take the Rapid Airport Express or JR Line that connects many cities in Hokkaido, use a bus from the domestic terminal building, rent a car (you must have an international driving license), or book a taxi.

Since car rental can cost up to 20.000 JPY (240 SGD) and a taxi can cost up to 5.000 JPY (60 SGD), it’s recommended to take the JR Line to travel across Hokkaido from Sapporo Chitose Airport. It only costs around 160 JPY (2 SGD) to 2000 JPY (24 SGD) per trip.

Unfortunately, currently, there is no direct flight from Singapore to Hokkaido. However, there are a number of airlines that offer daily flights to Sapporo Chitose Airport, some of them are Thai Airways, Singapore Airlines, China Eastern, Korean Air, and Cathay Pacific.

Asahikawa Airport (AKJ)

Asahikawa Airport is a regional airport in Hokkaido that also serves several limited international flights from Seoul and Taipei. The airport has been operating since 1966 in Asahikawa, the second-largest city in Hokkaido.

The airport is accessible by bus from Asahikawa and Furano Station. It also has a regular bus schedule which departs every 15 minutes from the main terminal to the city. The bus ticket only cost 570 JPY (7 SGD) per trip. The fare is cheaper for kids and infants. If you have an international driving license, you can rent a car for 7000 to 10000 JPY (84 to 120 SGD) per day. The rate depends on the type of car you choose.

The airport, however, does not serve direct international flights from Singapore. Therefore, you must take a flight with one connection through ANA (All Nippon Airways), Japan Airlines, or Asiana Airlines.

Hokkaido has four seasons; Summer, Autumn, Winter, and Spring. The average annual temperature is 22 Celsius. The winter in this prefecture is very cold where the temperature can drop to -7 Celsius at night. If you are not a big fan of striking cold winds, August would be the perfect time to visit since the average temperature is stable at 26 Celsius.
