Best Time to Visit Windhoek
Windhoek enjoys mild, pleasant weather throughout the year, but the best times to visit are from May to October. Spanning the tail end of autumn to winter and the beginning of spring, these months feature cooler weather and fewer rains, making outdoor activities more comfortable to engage in. The drier climate also facilitates wildlife-watching, as water bodies in national parks start drying up and causing animals to congregate around leftover water holes in greater concentration.
Windhoek is located in a semi-desert region and therefore can experience very steep changes in temperature from day to night. As such, tourists are advised to pack warm clothing as temperatures have been known to plummet after dark in winter.
Things to do in Windhoek
Capital city Windhoek’s proximity to Namibia’s famed wilderness and national parks makes it a popular starting point for game drives outside the city. One popular destination is Daan Viljoen Game Park, located 38 kilometres away in the green hills of Khomas Hochland. Though not very large, the Park is popular with locals and tourists alike as visitors are given free rein to wander the grounds on their own and nature-watch to their heart’s content. Pack a picnic lunch with you before you go, and spend a leisurely afternoon observing the region’s countless exotic birds as well as the large game like springbok, wildebeest, mountain zebra, baboons and more.
