Formerly known as Wangyehmiao, Ulanhot is a country-level city in the East of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Between the years 1947 and 1950, Ulanhot serves as the capital of Mongolia Region. However, the title was moved to Zhangjiakou. At present, its neighbouring city, Hohhot, remains as the Inner Mongolia’s capital since its announcement in 1952. A quaint city in the Inner Mongolia, nothing much is left to see here, except for a few temples within it, and a tomb that dates back to the Yuan dynasty just outside the city. Ulanhot may not be like its neighbouring capital city of Hohhot which offers many pleasant sights to see, but surely, a city so small can encapsulate the intricacies of its few sites and attractions.
The Mausoleum of Genghis Khan is located along a river in Kandehuo Enclosure, Ejin Horo Qi town near the Ulanhot. It is a temple devoted to the worship of Genghis Khan, with the worship to the leader acting as a popular religion among Mongolians. The mausoleum contains no body but houses only the headdresses and accessories of the leader. It was just recently built between 1954 and 1956 by the People’s Republic of China government in the traditional Mongol style, with its overall façade in line with the aura of the city. You can also opt to visit one of the historic sites in Ulanhot, which is the establishment meeting of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Government. The massive building structure is standing strong, marking the Mongolian’s character of resilience.

And oh, while in here, do not pass up the chance to taste the heavenly baked sheep, which is truly spectacular.
How to get around within Ulanhot
Ulanhot Airport is approximately 17km to downtown area. To reach the Inner Mongolia, you can take the taxi and instruct the driver to go to 八里八. The ride will take about 18 minutes. Upon reaching your destination, you can wait for a bus which will take you closer to Inner Mongolia. The bus will make 11 stops and travel time will be about 39 minutes before it makes its final stop. From there, you can begin walking approximately 1.5km going to the centre.

Ulanhot Airport is serviced by Air China, China Eastern Airlines, China United Airlines, Shenzhen Airlines, and Tianjin Airlines. The aforementioned airlines only fly to domestic destinations such as Beijing-Capital, Beijing-Nanyuan and Hohhot, Ordos, and Shenyang.
