Chile, officially known as the Republic of Chile, is located in South America’s south-western point. Chile shares a land border with Argentina, Bolivia, Peru and the Drake Passage. The country also shares a maritime border with the Pacific Ocean. The northern part of Chile is primarily desert landscape while the south is grazing lands and lush forests. Also on the southern coast, travellers will find a gorgeous maze of canals, fjords and inlets.
Thanks to the country’s long and narrow shape, Chile enjoys a varied climate so I can vary depending on the visitor’s location. Travellers can experience a dry desert climate such as when in Atacama or a Mediterranean climate found in central Chile to wet and rainy weather experienced in southern Chile.
More and more visitors have been travelling to Chile to experience its natural beauty, which includes the San Pedro de Atacama and the Valley of the Moon. Other popular tourist destinations in Chile that travellers flock to while in Chile are the Conguillo National Park, Torres del Paine National Park and the UNESCO World Heritage site of Valparaiso. Of course, Chile is also home to the popular Easter Island.
When planning a holiday in Chile, travellers are definitely spoilt for choice on places to go, sights to see and activities to do. Here are more reasons to visit these popular tourist spots:
Torres del Paine National Park – Also known as the Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in Spanish, the Torres del Paine National Park encompasses glaciers, mountains, rivers and lakes in the southern Chilean Patagonia. The Cordillera del Paine, situated between the Magellanic sub polar forests and the Patagonian Steppes, is one of the main destinations for the park.
La Moneda Palace – Locally known as the Palacio de La Moneda or just La Moneda, the La Moneda Palace is the seat of the President of the Republic of Chile. It is also where the office of three cabinet ministers is located. The entire building occupies a whole block in downtown Santiago and was built in a neoclassical style with Roman Doric influences. The building is a UNESOC World Heritage site and definitely a beautiful architectural site to visit.
Easter Island – Found in the Pacific Ocean’s southeast and at the Polynesian Triangle’s south-eastern point, Easter Island is popular among travellers for its 887 extant monumental statues called the moai. These monolithic figures were constructed by the Rapa Nui between 1250 and 1500. Easter Island is also considered to be one of the world’s most isolated inhabited islands with the closest neighbour 2,000 kilometres away.
