Highly recommended!

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. The hotel is very rustic and cute. The room was very clean. Our room had a balcony and we could see the mountains. The staff were very friendly and helpful specially Jose Luis. Anything and everything we needed, Jose Luis was there to help and suggest. The hotel has a terrace with an amazing view. Right next to the hotel, there is a cute restaurant called Las Bugambilias. The restaurant serves homemade food. They have their daily menu and that’s it. That’s all they serve but the food is really good and they make the tortillas at the moment they serve you. The price for 3 people was $200 pesos !! This restaurant does not sell sodas just homemade lemonade and Jamaica. I will definitely stay in this hotel because is just one block away from the main fountain in the centre of Cuetzalan.

Charming and convenient

I spent a weekend in Cuetzalan with Mexican friends, and it truly was a magical experience. (Cuetzalan is one of Mexico's "pueblos magicos.") El Encuentro was a big part of the charm. We arrived quite late in the evening in the pouring rain, and were directed to a room at the back of the hotel, which proved to look out over the tile rooves of the town to ranges of hills in the distance. Having looked around the inn, and having read other comments, it's clear that not all rooms at El Encuentro enjoy such a marvellous view. However, we were thrilled, and it was beautiful to watch the fog lifting in the early morning. Our room was comfortable, with two double beds, and a good-sized bathroom with plenty of towels. The bed was comfortable, and extra blankets were available. Everything was clean and well-appointed, and I was charmed by the stencilled decoration and the wall niche featuring a lovely oversized set of rosary beads. The central courtyard features a lovely ceramic angel and numerous plants. The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, and the inn is located a few steps from the centre of town. The parking lot is a short walk away; not so nice in the rain, but as close as it could be in this densely built-up community. I would definitely stay there again.

A sweet hotel, but choose a room carefully

We spent many days here. The location is great, a block and a half from the zocalo, the staff friendly and helpful. We had a great room on the top level, looking out on the lower town, even the zocalo, where we could watch the voladores preparing for their flight. Very clean. But we saw that some rooms didn't have a view, or maybe, just to the inner courtyard. I heard that the folks who own the hotel also have connections to the botanical gardens outside of town, so it has a lovely inner courtyard. It felt extremely safe, as opposed to Puebla where our hotel cautioned not to leave anything in the room. Every coming and going was certainly watched. It was a nice experience in this beautiful town.

A solid option in Cuetzalan

I did some research on TrioAdvisor before booking through booking.com, which allowed me to pay on arrival and not in advance. The staff was the best part of my experience at El Encuentro!! There was always someone available at the front desk. They helped me with various things during my three day/two night stay. They helped give me directions, plan a trip to the pyramids, and they also recommended various tours. They actually offer various tour packages on-site, but due to my short stay, I didn't have enough time to do a full tour. Despite that, they helped me plan a outing to the pyramids and clearly explained to me how to get there. They were truly incredibly helpful and kind. However, I remembered reading on TripAdvisor or booking.com that the hotel offered a breakfast option for a fee, but this was not mentioned to me. I don't know if it is offered or not. When I arrived, they showed me to my room but did not show me around... My second night there, I arrived back at El Encuentro after dark and I spotted a spiral staircase in the back corner of the courtyard, which I decided to follow upstairs. There was a lovely terrace overlooking the zocalo. I don't know why this wasn't mentioned or advertised - be sure to check it out!! The rooms?? Mine was very basic and small. I had a double bed, two bedside tables, a wardrobe, and a bench. There was also a fan and a TV. The bed was quite uncomfortable, but after a busy day I did sleep well. The pillows were flat, but I was alone, so I stacked them on top of each other and it was fine. The bathroom was also small, but had ample counter and shelf space. They provided hand soap, shampoo, and towels, an a bottle of water. My room served me just fine, I can't complain, aside from the super thin mattresses. Then windows provided ample lighting during the day, but at night I was left with a single dull bulb. This didn't bother me too much, though.
I visited Cuetzalan in January, which is the cold, rainy season. It was COLD outside - in the forties (F) when I arrived. It was, in turn, VERY cold in my room. Since there is no heat, all they could do was offer me an additional blanket. They brought me a huge, thick fleece blanket and it was PERFECT. ☺
Shower and sink both got very hot and it was wonderful to wake up tona warm shower!!
I recommend El Encuentro, but remember, this is not a place full of amenities. It serves the basic purpose of lodging, and it does it well, with smiling, friendly service and reasonable prices. But it is BASIC!! Great location, too!!
To eat, check out La Terraza just a short walk up the street.

Fine stay at El Encuentro

I read a review here at Travel Advisor about this hotel and it seemed quite all right for a weekend getaway. It seemed like cheap option that was very close to Cuetzalan downtown, so I would just need a place to crash. True, but it turned out to be much better than I expected.
The place is very clean and very well located, just in the heart of downtown Cuetzalan. You have the option to walk half a block to the best restaurant in town (La Terraza, ask for the Acamayas or Camarones enchipotlados), or walk two blocks and go near the Church, with a wide assortment of restaurants, bars and the one and only place to dance.
I arrived at the hotel and found that the managers are quite weird but all the rest was quite good.
You'll spend 70 us dollars TOPS for a 3 double-bed room. 70 dollars per bedroom not per person.
The view from the room was quite nice... plus, what would you be doing indoors in Cuetzalan??? If you travel all the way there, do take the horse ride, go to the grutas, and do some hiking. If you stay at El Encuentro ask where Chamaki is, that is their bar. It's quite lonely sometimes but then you get the pool table all for yourself.
Ideal for romantic couples.
