Villahermosa is the capital and the largest city of the Mexican state of Tabasco, and is the municipal seat of the Centro municipality. It plays an important role as a significant business centre for the Mexican oil industry. Known as La Esmeralda del Sureste (The Emerald of the Southeast), this modern city brims with natural resources, in terms of agriculture and farming, but most especially, oil. It is also because of the search for oil that artefacts of the Olmec culture are found.

The city is also served by major merchants like Liverpool, Fábricas de Fráncia, Palacio de Hierro, Wal-Mart, City Club (wholesale club), Soriana, Comercial Mexicana, and Home Depot. In addition, all the major national banks are represented here as well. Some of the sights that you should definitely check out during your visit here include Parque-Museo La Venta, a fascinating outdoor park and zoo, which is devoted to animals from Tabasco and nearby regions; it is also a museum that houses significant finds like three colossal stone heads. Visit the newly rebuilt Museo Regional de Antropología, which holds a number of excellent exhibits on Olmec, Maya, Nahua, and Zoque cultures in Tabasco. There’s also Museo de Historia, an impressive 19th-century building which has exhibits on Tabasco history. Children and adults alike will surely get fascinated with Museo de Historia Natural, which has good displays on

dinosaurs, space, early humanity and Tabascan ecosystems. Enjoy panoramic sights overlooking the city and Río Grijalva, atop the Torre del Caballero (a lookout tower), known locally as ‘El Mirador’.

You can explore Villahermosa by bus or taxi. If you want to get around by bus, you should know that there are two main streets in the city, Av. Gregorio Mendez and Av. 27 de Febrero, which serve as the two main routes for public transportation. Most locals use mini-buses and combis (refurbished small VW vans), which have fixed stops and destinations written on the windshields. The city has a network of collective taxis. It is advised that you should ask the driver first if he is going by your destination since taxis here have no pre-established routes, but passengers sharing a taxi if they are bound to the same route is practised here.

Villahermosa International Airport is just a 15-minute drive from the city. Main flights are to and from Mexico City, Merida Yucatan, Monterrey NL, Cancun Quintana Roo, and Houston in Texas. The city is also accessible via road, at highways 180 and 195; as well as bus via intercity bus service to and from surrounding cities like Ciudad del Carmen on Grupo ADO.
