What makes a destination a dream destination? What excites our imaginations about these far-off places? In a recent Skyscanner survey, one of the top reasons for Singapore travellers to consider dream destinations is if it allows them a once in a lifetime experience.
We found some incredible accommodations around the world that are as magical as every other aspect of the trip. Round out your bucket list with our guide to some of the dreamiest lodgings in the world, for that once in a lifetime experience.
1. Live in a Buubble – Iceland
When five-star hotels just don’t cut it anymore, try upgrading to a 5 million star hotel. Iceland tops the bucket lists of many of our peers, and we can’t think of a better way to take in the breathtaking natural beauty of the northern lights and the arctic skies than in The Buubble, the outdoor capsule hotel that allows you to sleep under the wide Icelandic sky, unsullied by a drop of light pollution, allowing you to peer into eternity.
Located on a farm roughly one hundred kilometres from Reykjavik, Buubble is a tour operator that puts guests up in inflatable bubbles under the stars. The transparent rooms, kept warm and dry using compressed air that is continuously recycled, may lack facilities (there’s a toilet separate from the bubble), but none of this detracts from the once-in-a-lifetime nature of the overnight experience.
2. Live on the edge – Santorini, Greece
Instagram feeds have been clogged up with pictures of the quaint villages and beautiful beaches of the Greek islands. These places don’t get more mythical than Santorini, the jewel of the Aegean Sea. Iconic Santorini, a boutique hotel carved into the rocky hillside of the city, puts a unique spin on Greek stays by furnishing caves with comfortable beds and en-suite wading pools that overlook the sea.Find your flight to Santorini
3. Live inside books – Tokyo, Japan
The idea of “luxury” differs from other travellers, and for the bookworms among us, Tokyo’s Book and Bed Hotel might be the most incredible accommodation of choice on this list. The hotel itself is more of a hostel, with rooms offering a simple bed, reading, and unlimited access to the hotel’s extensive library.
After wandering Tokyo, you can return to a cosy den enveloped in books. A true introvert’s dream. The only way to improve on this experience is to provide a cat as well. As they say, you can’t have your cake and eat it too.
4. Live in the middle of ocean – Maldives
For many, the Maldives is the epitome of an ultimate island getaway. There’s not much in the way of shopping or museums on these island resorts, but there is no doubt that you will be engrossed in experiencing the tropical bliss of these tiny atolls.
Baros Maldives, one of the pioneers of the Maldives resort scene, boasts protected reefs that are thriving in the calm waters of the inner atolls, perfect for leisurely paddles through the aquascape. You can choose between land-based cabanas or huts that jut out into the water. No matter what option you choose, you will be lulled to sleep by the gentle sound of waves crashing on the sandy shore. Located within the Male atoll, Baros is a short boat ride from the airport but still feels wonderfully remote.
5. Live like you time-travelled to the 1920s – New York
New York is THE city of dreams, and this little boutique hotel situated in the hip West Village is the perfect place to base yourself as you explore the island of Manhattan. Housed in a century-old building that formerly housed sailors, the lovingly restored Jane Hotel maintains its opulence and glitz of yesteryears. The rooms, meant to evoke early 20th-century ship travel, will make you feel like you’re sailing First Class, and the gorgeously renovated rooftop bar looks lifted straight from the set of a Wes Anderson film. We can’t imagine a better base for your Big Apple excursions.
6. Live almost like an Incan – Machu Picchu, Peru
A trip to the top of the Andes is a once-in-a-lifetime trek to see one of the true wonders of the ancient world. Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel is a slice of luxury nestled in the tropical jungles. It’s located at the bottom of the trail to Machu Picchu, just a short walk from the Machu Picchu train station. This eco-resort, done in the style of the traditional inhabitants of the region, this the perfect place to pamper your weary body after your trek.Find your flight to Lima
7. Live like a royal – Turkey, Istanbul
Royal dreams are made of these, and you can get it right in Instanbul. The Ciragan Palace Hotel, located on the banks of the Bosphorus, is a taste of the sumptuous life of the Ottoman rulers. Housed in a former palace built in the 1860s, this luxury hotel is home to the Sultan’s Suite, one of the most expensive hotel rooms in the world that comes with its own private helicopter.
