Flights from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Java, Indonesia

The Jakarta International Airport – also known as the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport – is located on the Indonesian island of Java and serves the Greater Jakarta area, including the capital city. It is considered the main international airport in Indonesia, as well as one of South East Asia’s busiest. Named after the first President of Indonesia (Soekarno) as well as the first vice-President (Mohammad Hatta), the Airport today has 3 terminals with a fourth one under construction and serves over 40 million passengers each year.

Located only about 20km from the city of Jakarta, passengers have the option of taking a bus, taxi or driving to the city from the airport. The DAMRI shuttle bus – the cheapest option – goes to multiple destinations within Jakarta including Rawamangun, Gambir and others, with a journey time of approximately 1.5 hours. For those wanting a speedier ride, the city is about an half hour’s drive away, either by rental car or taxi.

The Soekarno-Hatta International Airport is very well-connected, with flights to almost all major cities in Indonesia. For a quick weekend getaway, Denpasar Airport in Bali is a popular choice from Jakarta. With its world-renowned white sandy beaches, swaying coconut trees, turquoise waters and abundance of beach resorts, hang up a hammock and grab a book as all your worries and stresses wash away with the tide.

An alternative destination for a tranquil beach holiday would be Batam, also a short direct flight from Soekarno-Hatta Airport. An idyllic little island, it offers a myriad activities: you can go snorkelling near the shore, take a boat out for a dive, try your hand at waterskiing or wakeboarding before having a rejuvenating Balinese massage and eating delicious seafood freshly caught offshore. If shopping is more your thing, Batam also offers traditional markets where you can experience bartering for local produce, handicraft or antiques.

Alternatively, you can fly direct to bustling Surabaya from Soekarno-Hatta Airport for a look at another Indonesian megacity. Surabaya is the second largest city in Indonesia (the first being Jakarta) and known to locals as Kota Pahlawan, which means the City of Heroes. Learn about Surabaya’s turbulent past through observing the commemorative statues of independence fighters located all around the city, many of whom are regarded as Indonesian heroes for their role in the independence movement. Even the city’s name stems from aggressive conditions; legend has it that the city, sitting at the mouth of the Brantas river, was the site of a battle between a shark (sura) and a crocodile (baya).

For a vacation a little further away, how about Vietnam’s famed Saigon, now called Ho Chi Minh City? Less than 3 hours away from Soekarno-Hatta Airport, this city was once called the ‘Diamond of the Far East’ with its interesting mix of traditional Chinese-style pagodas with Western architecture like wide tree-lined boulevards and French villas. Now the most populated city in Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City boasts a skyline of modern skyscrapers but also has its history carefully preserved in historic buildings such as the Reunification Palace, a great iconic landmark and reminder of the bitter wars between the French and American colonial powers that once took place on Vietnamese soil.

If you’re up for a longer flight, Taipei’s Taoyuan Airport is about five and a half hours away from Soekarno-Hatta Airport and is one of Asia’s most popular tourist destinations, for good reason. With everything most tourists need in a vacation – night markets for cheap shopping, excellent dining options at low prices, natural hot springs for some much-needed relaxation and more – what’s stopping you from getting on that plane?

But if it’s nature you’re looking for, you can fly direct to Perth, Australia’s sunniest capital city. With everything from beaches, parkland, a vibrant nightlife, impressive array of marine wildlife and more, the only bad thing about a vacation to Perth is that you have to leave at the end.
