With its trendy, young vibe, la Mariscal has become a tourist hub for its hip coffee shops, bars, and clubs. Great place to spend a fun evening!

In the center of the Mariscal tourist district you will find this small, charming and trendy modern plaza dubbed "Gringolandia" - the current heart beat of Quito's nightlife. Also known as Plaza Quinde this plaza is a radical and highly successful transformation from a former seedy, run-down intersection (previously known for drugs and prostitution) into a pristine plaza - the area's star attraction. With an ample selection of bistros and international restaurants, this area attracts foreigners and the more affluent locals. This Municipality-led regeneration has been a roaring success, connecting with the nearby streets of Calama, Juan León Mera, Pinto and Diego de Almagro to make a fun, dynamic and entertaining district for foreigners and locals alike.

This is supposedly the "tourist area" of Quito, and the larger streets are lined with fancier shops. There are quite a few hostels in this area, and quite a few night clubs. I stayed in the area one night and was warned by several locals to only carry as much cash as I needed, since stick-ups were common. Though the streets were filled with young people in groups and couples, there were few or no police about--be careful, especially late at night. If you're like me and feel a sense of pride from getting "off the beaten path," it's tempting to avoid a place known to locals as "Gringolandia," but it really is the most convenient place to stay if you're visiting Quito, and you'll find it's also a lot of fun. La mariscal is a one shop stop for lodging, food, guides and souvenirs and is the perfect base for exploring quito and its surroundings. There's a huge variety of bars, restaurants and nightclubs here, and most are frequented by both locals and tourists alike, which sort of surprised me at first, as I figured most locals would want nothing to do with tourists--but that's really not the case here (just watch out for gringueros--local men looking to pick up foreign women). While it's generally on the safer side, as a woman, I tried to avoid walking alone after dark. When in doubt, take a cab.

Nicknamed "Gringoland", it has a great night life. Visit Plaza Foch: Ground Zero in Mariscal. About five minutes walking distance from your penthouse or a couple minutes by taxi cab.

Fun place. This is best part of Quito to hang in if you are a younger, international traveler. Lots of great bars, restaurants, Internet cafes, shops, etc.
