it is. It tries to be two things and ends up being neither. The bigger name hotels in Miami need replacing by something younger, more agile. But, I don't think the Freehand is the answer.

Local from Miami Beach

One of the best bars in Miami Beach. However, the hostel was not clean at all. The bathrooms in the rooms need major updates. Some of the beds were also not clean. Loud music till 3 am. At least the breakfast and drinks were good.

Freehand is a great backyard oasis with a top notch bar and a pool to boot. The atmosphere is always great. And the vibe is very different then a lot of other spots on the beach. It is a come as you are kind of place.

Local from Miami Beach

A bohemian bungalow hideaway in a quiet area of Miami Beach, Freehand didn't become what it is today until the Broken Shaker opened its pop up bar in the then-Indian Creek Hotel, a long forgotten barracks-style hotel. The hotel had retained most of its charm since its original construction and the visionary bartenders from New York saw an opportunity to make something totally unique to Miami, and yet different than what was around at the time. Ambient beats are the soundtrack wafting through the dimly lit courtyard on your typical Saturday night. The rooms were updated to accommodate a hostel-style setup, but its still possible to get a single if you want a more private stay. Handcrafted cocktails in crystal pictures are a staple at this local favorite.

Freehand Hostel stands out because it has a very hip vibe, friendly service, and bohemian kitch décor. An adventurous hipster would feel right at home and the Europeans won't notice the bad service in the lounge. The Broken Shaker Lounge is the hostel's strong suit. Tucked away in a banyan tree forest, you can find respite from the madness of South Beach with an herb-infused cocktail and a soak in the pool. The atmosphere is so wholesome you'll want to sit around a campfire and have sing-a-longs. The double room had cool decorations and everything was clean and tidy. My only complaint is the noise, but that could be avoided if you don't stay on the first floor.

New York City

A classic Miami hotel has been redesigned into a combination of hotel and hostel. The location is closer to north beach which creates a much different atmosphere than what you find further south. The beach is about a block away and much less crowded. The water is also cleaner and calmer.

The lobby has a rustic sort of feel to it, with solid wood beams, ceilings and tables bathed in lots of natural light. There's a massive collection of National Geographic magazines, along with other books and board games.

The rooms have kind of a nautical design with solid wood bed frames and tables. There are a lot of practical details that make the dorm rooms work well. Each bed has lights and plugs. There are also two bathrooms per room.

One of the best features here is the poolside bar. There's a creative mix of cocktails that feature herbs from the rooftop garden and on weekends the it is opened to the public which creates a much better social atmosphere than most hostels.
