de Malaga. Constructed on the site of an old mosque in Andalusia, southern Spain between 1528 and the 1700s, the cathedral reflects influences of the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Malaguenos refer to the splendid cathedral as La Manquita (Little One-Arm) since it has only one bell tower instead of two. Locals recall tiring of the eternal special taxes for the building and discontinuing plans for further construction. The exquisite interior includes sculptured choir seating, two organs that feature 40,000 well-preserved pipes and artwork by Pedro de Mena. You are sure to marvel at the exterior, immaculately groomed gardens, open-air/courtyard museum and side chapels.

Local from Malaga

Dominating the skyline of Malaga, the Cathedral is one of the most notable buildings of the city. Whilst the inside of the Cathedral features Renaissance architectural elements, on the outside, the facade has been built in a Baroque style, with marble columns and stone carvings. It is almost impossible to capture the entire Cathedral in one photo. As you look up, towards the tower, you feel like it doesn’t end, and no wonder, as it is 84 meters tall. The locals call the tower of the Cathedral “La Manquita", which translates as the “one armed lady”. This is because the Cathedral has only one tower – the other one has never been finished.

The construction of the Cathedral in Malaga began in 1528 after capturing Malaga from the Moors. It was built on the top of a former Mosque, which was destroyed when the Moors lost the town. Construction was not finished until 1782, and as a result shows many different architectural styles such as a Gothic foundation, Renaissance facades and Baroque towers.
