neoclassical monument is an architectural masterpiece, more than worthy of serving as the home to the Ballet Folklorico de Jalisco and affiliated schools for arts and crafts. The institute features 23 lush courtyards, with a gift shop and cantina. On a guided tour, you learn about the 106-room collection of artistic works, including surrealist bronze statues and contemporary exhibitions (cameras with no flash are permitted). The highlight of this one-time shelter/orphanage (Casa de la Misericordia) and nursing home (Hospicio Cabanas), 1810-1983, is the collage of 50+ murals by famous artist Jose Clemente Orozco. Dating back to the 1930s, the frescoes portray the history of Mexico and showcase a man ascending through flames in the rousing cupola masterpiece “Man of Fire” ("El Hombre de Fuego").

This neoclassical beauty and one-time orphanage is now one of the highlights of downtown Guadalajara. Beyond being architecturally interesting it also houses several lush gardens, a cultural institute, and an art museum. The highlight of the place, though, are a set of 53 murals--all created by Mexican artist Jose Clemente Orozco--depicting the struggle for freedom. Many consider these to be among his greatest works. (Don't miss the one in the cupula--you'll literally have to lay down on a bench to appreciate it.) FYI--around town, this place is known as 'Hospicio Caban~as'.

The Instituto Cultural Cabanas is one of the most important historical sights in Guadalajara. You must make an effort to visit this World Heritage Sights, if for no other reason than to check out the Orozco murals, considered by many experts to be his greatest works.

The institute sits in a neoclassical building that was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997. I recommend you visit it because it houses several murals by José Clemente Orozco. In addition, temporary exhibitions of internationally recognized artists and also of local artists such as Diego Rivera, María Izquierdo or David Alfaro Siqueiros are held at the Cabaña Cultural Institute.
