Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand Holidays

The coolest city in Thailand, both in temperature and attitude, Chiang Mai is the base for hill treks and other far-flung adventures in Northern Thailand, but it's a city that stands up on its own. The moat-encircled old city is the best place to get a taste of historic Thailand -- plus, visitors have their pick of a multitude of cooking, language ... Read more
and other types of classes. You'll also notice plenty of hill tribe people here; each tribe has their own style of distinctive dress. The Golden Triangle is most often accessed by Chiang Rai -- visitors usually head this way on their way to Laos or Burma, or to just get away from it all at one of the small towns along the Mekong River. Of course, there are all sorts of opportunities for trekking or spending time among the hill tribe culture in this region, as well. Sukhothai, spot of the first independent Thai kingdom in the 13th Century, is worth a peek for the Sukhothai Historical Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the vestiges of the ancient kingdom are still standing proud.

I loved the food in Thailand! One of the most memorable meals I ever had was sitting on floor cushions with a hot pot in front of me and my friends who were sharing the meal with me. It was similar to fondue but NOT, so much yummier! We cooked dinosaur shaped meat and ate with chopsticks. This, along with the company of my friends was most memorable.

Northern Thailand is one of my favorite places to travel. In certain areas it can be very touristy, lie in Chiang Mai , for example, but people, myself included still love it. Northern Thailand is beautiful, the landscape is gorgeous, and there is lots to see and do for the visitor. I found Northern Thailand to be cheaper than the south and the people are much friendlier. Mae Hong Song and Tha Ton are my favorite stops in the north.

I have always love Chiang Mai. I recommend going while there is a festival on, like April for Songkran or November for Loi Krathong. Chiang Mai offers a variety of trekking tours to the hills tribe or even cruise a few days on the river. I especially enjoyed the visit to the Tiger Kingdom and the elephant camp. In Chiang Rai, you have to visit the White Temple, it is amazing.

Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand have a much more laid back and traditional vibe than the frenetic bustle of Bangkok or the overtly touristy (albeit spectacularly beautiful) islands in the south. If you're looking for a good blend of Thai history, culture, eclectic shopping and fantastic food, spend a couple of days exploring the ancient walled heart of central Chiang Mai. Along with beautiful temples, friendly people and great nightlife this is a city experiencing a renaissance in design. It's a funky blend of modern style mixed with traditional arts and crafts reflected in the unique boutique hotels and trendy shops and restaurants that line Nimanheamin Road.

If you have the time, spend a few days exploring the atmospheric mountain villages further north. The tiny village of Pai nestled in the hills close to the Burmese border is a true off-the-beaten-path gem for adventurous backpackers and Thai's on romantic weekend getaways.
