in the early twentieth century. The castle’s external architecture contains elements of Baroque and Medieval styling, and the interior attempts to match, though very little is known of what the building’s original interior was. The castle is presently home to multiple museums and public resources, including the Budapest History Museum, the Hungarian National Gallery and the Hungarian National Library.

Large beautiful grounds overlooking the city. The views are spectacular! It is free to wonder around, and the cost is associated with entering the museum and gallery.

It's a castle and a palace of the Hungarian Kings, dating back to the 1200's.

Settled on the Castle Hill among the numerous buildings, this incredible 200-room palace is a spectacular scenario, especially at night when it is illuminated. The interior is beautiful indeed although the views of the city are stunning! Go there to enjoy the sunset.

Buda Castle is the historical castle and palace comples of the Hungarian kings in Budapest. In the past, it has been called Royal Palace and royal Castle. The castle is a part of the Budapest World Heritage Site, which was declared a Heritage Site in 1987.

The castle is gorgeous (on Buda side), and views from the castle across the Danube are the most beautiful we have seen. Built in 1265 and World Heritage Site.

Local from Budapest

The old Royal Palace on the Castle Hill in Buda. The typical photo icon of the city from the Pest side. The whole area is protected from Unesco World Heritage. Just pass the Chain Bridge (Lánchíd) take the funicular and enjoy the most old part of the city upstairs o the hill or take some photos with the panorama to the Pest side.

Very impressed when I first saw this in 1989. Hungary was the frontier for much of the past 500 years. The Austro-Hungarian Empire had to contend with the Ottomans and the Russians, and this was for many where civilisation ended.

The Buda Castle grounds are open 24/7 so it was fun to go exploring at night. Everything is well lit up and it just has a real magical quality about it. There are so many different courtyards and layers that I spent a good hour+ wandering around and taking in the views of Pest and the Danube. The complex also holds several museums but I never got a chance to go back and visit any of them.

Buda Castle is another star of Budapest evening skyline. It dominates the skyline as it sits upon the hills of Buda and begs to be photographed.

This imposing building is a great castle and a great museum. The funny thing is that as far as the outside goes, I would rather see it from the other side of the river than close up. It really adds to the city view, and shouldn't be missed as a skyline item.

Perched on top of a highland elevation. It gives a good bird eye view of the city.

Buda Castle is not looked on by Hungarians with the same fondness as the Chain Bridge or the Parliament Building. The medieval structure was destroyed during the recapture of Budapest from the Turks and the current incarnation was built during the period of Habsburg Domination. It reached its current grandeur during the reign of Maria Theresa. Buda Castle is best reached via the funicular that runs from the Chain Bridge.
