I've lived in the Boston area for 30 years and this is my first time going to Modern! I've always been a Mikes guy but was very impressed with Modern. I didn't have a Canolli's but I did have some homemade Torrone which was delicious!

Tip: make sure to bring cash when you go to the North End as a lot of the shops are still cash only!

Modern has great cannolis and pastries, better than Mike's across the street. Not way better, but better. I was happy with Mike's but after trying Modern, Modern it takes the win, but I still enjoy Mike's and I'll be back to both next time I'm in Boston. You should know it's cash only.

I prefer this one to Mike's (sorry, Mike). And they are both excellent. If you like canoli (or if you have never before met a canoli) you really must try one. Boston's Italian North End is a mini-trip to Italy.

Give me one of everything! Canoli's are on par for competing with all the other bakeries. The ricotta pie is also good but dense so have a drink ready.

Modern Pastry is the quieter of the two rival canoli shops in the North End. Tourists pack into Mike's Pastry, but locals tend to prefer the canolis here. I was the neighborhood, so I popped in for a lobster tail to compare to Mike's. I wasn't as into Modern Pastry's because it was less crispy and had more filling, so it was more dense. I will definitely be back to try their canolis though!

Much better than Mike's, the Italian cookies and the cannoli are great but the "lobster tail" is the best thing they have there

There's usually a long line that moves swiftly in this old school Boston Bakery.

It's almost across the road from mikes so you can try both of you want. Known for the cannoli and baba rum.

Modern is across the street from the more well known Mike's and ultimately we prefer Modern. It's easier to get in and out of and though Mike's has much more cannoli variety we like Modern's basic ricotta the best.

North End is one of those places where the plethora of Italian delicacies from actual restaurants to pastry shops to coffee shops to gelateria never fails to impress and each received its proper attention and fans. Modern Pastry has made a name for itself despite being in close vicinity to Mike's Pastry where the cannoli lines never ends. Their new location is significantly larger and nicely decorated. From creme brulee to tiramisu to french horns to cannoli, can only thank the dessert god for these delicious treats.

Right down the street from Mikes Pastry, Modern Pastry offers a very good alternative to Mikes with lines that are usually a bit easier to manage. The lobster tail pastry is definitely worth trying!

The cannolis here are to die for! So fresh and perfect amount of sweetness. Was on my way to mikes, but heard about modern as well and this place is definitely worth a visit as well!

Modern is a poorly kept secret. The desserts are just about as good as Mikes, but usually without as long a line. The lobster tails here are outstanding, and the coffee and gelato are surprisingly good as well.

The battle of the canollis! FIGHT!

Everyone always talks about Mike's Pastry's, but the locals know that Modern Pastry is where it's at. Hands down best place in Boston to get cannolis and sure the line is long and the wait time is even longer, but it's absolutely worth it. The cannolis are freshly filled and the shell is light and crisp, unlike it's overly sugarly counterpart- not that I'm picking sides or anything :) So be sure to come here if you want to eat the best of the best, you won't be disappointed.

I hadn't brushed up on anything "Boston" before arriving here. When I saw the line outside the door of Modern Pastry, I knew that I had to wait in it for something.
Unfortunately, I really didn't have a hankering for anything and especially not cannoli--it just wasn't speaking to me. The server did say they were best known for their cannoli. In the window of the shop, they showed some nougats--hard, soft, chocolate covered, fruit topped, etc. I opted for a soft nut-filled nougat. Oh Mah Gaw!! This thing was fab. One side was covered in a wafer. At first I couldn't decide if I was eating paper or wafer but then I noticed how it melted in my mouth and had a nice mellow little flavor too.
My wait was only about 20 minutes. Seems the thing to do on Hanover Street so I was game.

Modern Pastry is a corner stone of the Italian community in Boston and the offerings here are more often than not very good. It's not the cheapest cup of coffee you can find in Boston though.

I stumbled upon this place while looking for Mike's Pastries. Who knew they were so close together?

I know this is little Italy and you're supposed to get Italian things like the cannoli's and tiramisu, but I ended up with red velvet. Hey, blame me ... I didn't really read up on this place thoroughly so perhaps next time (if there is!) I should definitely try something else.

This place was small and definitely not what I had imagined. The staff was friendly but there were a lot of "regulars" in there that were just hanging out I guess, and I felt weird since they were speaking in code ... but either way the bakery visit was a great success. They have delicious pastries here and the red velvet was pretty yummy. Off to Mike's!

It's better than Mike's for cannolis but could never beat my favorite little bakery for the title of Best Cannoli. They still have some yummy desserts though.
