Boise Holidays

Boise, the capital of Idaho, has much more to offer than the stereotypical potatoes, although its initial growth was thanks to the Simplot spud industry. The name Boise is said to refer to the trees, noted by an early French explorer. (Les Bois is French for woods). The Boise River running through this city of just over 200,000 is indeed shaded by ... a green and leafy canopy, and downtown Boise itself is chock-full of restaurants and shopping. The North End is characterized by historic homes and yes, trees, lining the streets. Both sports and culture have a strong presence, with local baseball, hockey, basketball and football and strong University teams, plus the Boise Philharmonic, Ballet Idaho, and the Boise Contemporary Theater Company, and the yearly Shakespeare Festival, to name just a few. Inner tubing on the river and skiing are, likewise, just a couple of the outdoor activities accessible. The best hotels and restaurants are mostly downtown, making Boise a city to explore from the inside out. If you find yourself in Boise, sure, grab yourself a potato T-Shirt (Darth Tater is a common slogan) and then get on with it: this city between the Pacific Northwest and the Rockies offers more than its fair share of activities.

Idaho is one of our country's best kept secrets. The area around Boise is rich in beauty, with quiet streams, beautiful mountains and abundant wildlife. There are places nearby to hike, fish, play in the water or play in the snow depending on the time of year. The scenic drives are amazing. The Sawtooth mountains soar nearby and are a wonderful day trip. Idaho City, an old mining town, has a wonderful hot springs to soak my cares away.

For both the city lover and the outdoor enthusiast. Boise has a university, a river, rock climbing, great food, markets, sports teams, hiking and biking trails, a ski mountain, a vibrant art scene and so much more. Boise is a family-friendly town that has something for everyone.

Local from Boise

During the summer Boise weather is fantastic. They have great restaurants, and many family oriented activities. The downtown night life is great. Some of the summer activities include Beer Fest, Music Fest, Floating the Boise river from Barber Park to Downtown.

Good time in the park. Very crowded and a long wait before the show started. Once the show started we had a great time looking at all the different balloons. It was a little disappointing that none of the balloons left ground.

With a higher downtown population then Salt Lake City, and a night life a restaurant culture of a much bigger city. What's not to love?

An up and coming that has a lot to offer. It's right near Oregon and is a nice stop if you're driving through to the coast. I really didn't think there would be much there, but I was pleasantly surprised by how many restaurants and bars there were to choose from.

We came through Boise on our way to Sun Valley. We had no problems so I guess this is not a bad place just not sure if there would be any reason to return except for another ski run.

Boise is an alright city. I've only been there during the summer though for a day or two max. It seems alright, reminds me a lot of a city in middle America. I don't think a lot of people would enjoy it here during the winter though.

Beautiful place to explore the outdoors
