Airlines that fly from Shanghai to Tokyo

The flights from Shanghai, China to Tokyo, Japan, are via airports Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport in Shanghai, to Haneda Airport and Narita International Airport in Tokyo. The airlines that operate direct flights on this route include Air China, China Eastern Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Japan Airlines, Juneyao Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, All Nippon Airways, and Spring Airlines. This route is served by at least 17 direct flights per day. As of writing, there are currently no direct flights going from Shanghai to Tokyo.

Terminal Information

Flights to Tokyo from Shanghai Pudong International Airport are out of Terminals 1 and 2; and out of Terminal 1 of Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. The flights arrive at Narita International Airport’s 1 South, 1 North, and 2 terminals; and at Haneda Airport’s International Terminal.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport’s Terminal 1 is located on an area that occupies 280,000 square metres, has a wave like exterior and was shaped to mimic the Kansai International Airport terminal but slightly shorter just enough to house its 28 gates, 13 of which work as double decker gates. The terminal was made to have a total of 204 check-in counters, 13 luggage conveyor belts, with a capacity to handle up to 20 million annual passengers. Terminal 2 on the other hand can handle 60 million annual passengers with around 4.2 million tonnes to approximately 4.6 million short tonnes of cargo, within a year’s period.

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport has two terminals in total, with Terminal 1 where the airport used to serve as the main airport of Shanghai, China. The airport handles mostly domestic flights with five city to city flights to Seoul, Taipei, Macau, Hong Kong, and Tokyo. Terminal 1 is used by international airlines and Spring Airlines.

Narita International Airport has a total of three terminals; the terminals that receive flights from Shanghai are Terminals 1 and 2. Terminal 1 has a satellite terminal design that divides the terminal into the south and north wings, together with the central building. Focusing mainly on the south and north wings, the terminal has two circular satellites with Satellites 1 and 2, with gates 11 to 18, and 21 to 24, connected to the North Wing. Other gates via Satellite 5 like gates 51 to 58 can be found connected to the South Wing. Terminal 1 South wing has a duty-free mall, the Narita Nakamise. The second terminal of the airport, Terminal 2, is divided into the main building and satellite. The terminal has a new walkway that connects the main to the satellite building, with its check-in, departures, and immigration control for arriving passengers to be found on the second floor. Lastly, Haneda Airport handles the incoming Shanghai flights via its International Terminal. The airport has a total of three terminals with each terminal managed and operated by private companies. Currently, the International Terminal which has started serving in 2010 is handled by Tokyo International Air Terminal Corporation.

Practical Information

Checking in via the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, first, get to the international check-in then the joint inspection for inspection and quarantine, customs, immigration, and security to head to the international concourse. The check-in within Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport is on the second floor of the Terminal 1. Please be advised that when checking in and boarding in the airport, be at the gate at least 30 minutes before departure and always pay attention to your flight information and the information on the board by the Boarding Gate. Generally, on international flights, some of the travel documents needed include a valid passport, boarding information, picture I.D., passport, and visa (if applicable).
