How to spot good credit card travel promotions

A good travel credit card travel is simply the one that suits you the best. You need to understand your spending habits, travel needs, and be able to do some basic math to calculate the real value of each programme or promotion to you.

1. Understand your bank’s reward points systems and conversion rates

Each bank will have its own reward points/credit system which can be converted into air miles (or other promotional rewards). You’ll need to understand how many bank reward points you get per $1 spending on a particular credit card. You also need to know how many air miles you can convert to with that 1 bank reward point. Note: some banks will charge you for converting reward points into air miles so do take that into account.

2. Read the fine print

To fully evaluate if a travel credit card promotion is for you or not, read the terms and conditions of the offer. Some offers require a minimum spend, and others have a maximum spending limit (which essentially caps the number of air miles you can earn). Going through the fine print will help you understand which promotion suits your spending habits and travel needs the best.
