Silver City is rural city in the southwestern New Mexico. It is famous for being the place where Billy the Kid came form. It also the gateway city to the Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument.
Strangely remote, surprisingly lively, and full of good food! It's a long haul to get here, but this little town is quintessential backroads NM, a good mix of random hippies, old-time multigeneration families and newly converted transplants from bigger cities. There are a few fantastic restaurants here (Curious Kumquat, Shevek...), and the hot springs in the Gila Wilderness are right nearby.
