i am an ipoh girl.... was born at the general hospital now known as hospital permaisuri bainun... spent most of my time here,... i think it is a nice place,... although i was schooled in a malay school formerly a christian school run by nuns,.... nowadays mandarin or cantonese is required if you want to work here,.... still most people know english... so it is tourist-friendly.... food-wise, there are many food outlets,... if you come to ipoh you should try ipoh hor fun, ngachoi kai (taugeh chicken), and fruit juice or iced milo :)... also, do shop at aeon ipoh or aeon station 18 or aeon klebang.... klebang being the newest... most aeon supermarkets have about the same retailers,... the newer ones have h&m, la senza and etc. also, would be nice if you have a local guide to bring you around,.... to order the right food,...
Ipoh is also known as 'Mountain city' because here the mountains can be seen every where you passed by. Ipoh is famous of "Bean Sprouts Chicken" or locals called 'Ghachoi chicken'. Now many tourist from other state of Malaysia liked to visit here or bought some biscuits or Ipoh products.
I enjoyed this temple very much, more than the Batu Caves in KL. Perak Tong supposedly has many more steps (450), but it was more fun than Batu Caves because its steps are winding and there are places to stop on the way up and look at the scenery. We booked the whole malaysia trip through Country Travel Mart and we are thankful for the nice services. Some reviews and photos under "Cave Temples" are about Perak Tong and we believe this cave temple is the most accessible from the town center if you don't have a car.
