Texas is the second largest state of the United States of America. It is a bit larger than the size of France. Texas also ranks second in terms of population with over 26.9 million inhabitants. The state is located in the southern part of the country and shares a border with Mexican states like Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas to the south. It is also bordered by New Mexico to the west, Oklahoma to the north, and Louisiana to the east.

Texas is divided into seven regions: these are Panhandle Plains, Prairies and Lakes, Piney Woods, Gulf Coast, South Texas Plains, Hill Country, and Big Bend Country. Also called as the “Lone Star”, Texas’ largest city is Houston. The state’s capital, meanwhile, is Austin, and its largest metro is Dallas—Fort Worth—Arlington.

What to see & do

There are many historical sites in Texas. One of the famous national parks in this place is the San Jacinto Battleground State Historical Park. It presents the 1836 battle between the people of Texas and Mexican Army. The San Jacinto Monument has a 570-foot-tall centrepiece, taller than the Washington Monument.

There was also a port city in Texas, named Galveston. A hurricane hit the port in 1900 and killed more than 6,000 residents. The city was rebuilt near the sea, and today, it is one of the famous historical sites in the downtown area.

Another popular tourist site is the Fort Davis National Historic Site, which is a restored fort in the town of Davis. There are mountains in this place and a desert, where people can see different animals like antelope, deer, roadrunners, and eagles.

How to get around within Texas

In Texas, trains are expensive and limited. It does not give service to those going to Panhandle and southern Texas. It only offers service from Orange, which is near Houston and El Paso. The Heartland Flyer runs from Fort Worth to Oklahoma City, while the Sunset Limited covers New Orleans to Los Angeles. It has stops in El Paso, Sanderson, Del Rio, San Antonio, Houston, and Beaumont. Another train line is the Texas Eagle, which spans from Los Angeles to San Antonio. It also has the same stops.

Meanwhile, there is a local commuter train called the Trinity Railway Express, which stretches from Centerpoint to Dallas. It has multiple stops.

Tourists can also take buses in going to different cities in Texas. Bus companies that offer intercity service include TNM&O, Kerrville Bus Co., and Americanos.

How to get there

There are two major airlines in Texas. These are the American Airlines and Southwest Airlines. The hubs of these air carriers are Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport and Love Field, which is the secondary airport of Dallas. Another is George Bush Intercontinental Airport, which is located in Houston. It has more than 20 airlines, including United Airlines, Avianca, Aeromexico, Interjet, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and many others. International destinations include Amsterdam, Seoul, Mexico, Istanbul, and Dubai, among others.
