Melbourne Airport, also known as Tullamarine Airport, is owned and operated by Australia Pacific Airports (Melbourne) Pty Ltd. Melbourne Airport is the gateway to the state of Victoria.
The airport has four terminals which host international and domestic flights.
How to get around
Melbourne’s taxis are a convenient way to get from the airport to your destination. You can catch a taxi from designated taxi ranks, or pre-book one. Taxi ranks are located on the ground floor outside Terminals 1 and between terminal 2 and 3. Terminal 4 will operate a taxi rank once construction of the new terminal is complete. Taxi fares vary based on distance, location and time of travel. Additional charges apply on some public holidays, when booking in advance, making an electronic payment, using toll roads, or when your taxi has five or more passengers. Using a taxi from the airport taxi rank incurs an additional $2.70 fee that may be passed on to you.
There is also a SKY Bus service that departs from and to the airport every 10 minutes.
Melbourne Airport has six car rental companies located on site. All have offices on the ground floor of the short term car park, and information desks in the Melbourne Airport domestic terminals.
Getting around the city is a cinch by bike, tram, bus, train or taxi. There is also the Melbourne Visitor Shuttle that can transport you to many of the sights.
What to see and do
Melbourne is a green city with plenty of beautiful gardens. The Royal Botanic Gardens are a picturesque haven for recreation and an important resource for education, conservation, science and horticulture. Another park worth visiting is Fitzroy Gardens, one of the city’s most historic and aesthetically pleasing gardens that follows a classic Victorian-era design. It has a miniature Tudor Village and a Fairies’ Tree which children will love.
In fact, Melbourne is extreme child-friendly. Take them to the Melbourne Zoo with more than 300 species of animals and the Melbourne Aquarium which has the world’s only display of Elephant Sharks. With interactive encounters and state-of-the art displays, the aquarium will be an educational experience for the family. Wonderland Fun Park is another attraction that has carnival rides and excitement for the whole family. If your children are older, you might want to take them to Hardrock where they can enjoy a day of rock-climbing.
Melbourne has a vibrant art and theatre scene, so if you’d like to take in an exhibition, you could visit Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia where the National Gallery of Victoria displays its Australian collection of artworks or the National Gallery of Victoria which often hosts blockbuster exhibitions and has the world’s finest art collections. Do take in a play or two if you have the time.
