Formally opened in 2000, Mandalay International Airport is the largest and most modern of the three international airports in Myanmar. Located 45 kilometers from the city, the airport is connected to Mandalay city via a toll highway. The airport was built to spur economic and tourism growth in the city and the rest of the country.

Currently, the airport handles domestic flights to most cities across Myanmar. Major airlines such as Air Asia, China Eastern, and Thai Airways also provide international connections from Mandalay to Asian cities which include Bangkok, Chiangmai, Kunming and Singapore. Mandalay International Airport is the main operating base of Golden Myanmar Airlines.

Upon arrival at the Mandalay International Airport, the ground transport options are limited to private taxis, shared taxis and pre-arranged hotel transfers. Air Asia and Golden Myanmar Airlines offer free shuttle buses for their passengers from the airport to the city and back.

The city of Mandalay is in the northern part of Myanmar and lies on the eastern banks of the Ayeyarwaddy River. Established in 1857, Mandalay is also a former capital of the country. Also known as Mahamuni Paya, the Maha Myat Muni Paya is Myanmar's second holiest pilgrimage site. It’s main feature is a 4-metre high Buddha statue, clad in gold and encrusted with precious jewels. Only men ar allowed to approach the Mahamuni, and for a fee one can participate in the ceremonial tradition of decoarting the statue with gold leaves. It is an experience not to be missed.

Shwenandaw Monastery

Located at the foot of mandalay Hill, this monastery is made entirely out of intricately carved teak wood.  originally part of the Royal Palace, it was relocated to its current site in the late 19th century. It is said to be the only major part of the palace which survived the Second World War.

Kuthodaw Pagoda

Thsi pagoda is home to an image of the Buddha carved out of a single block of marble from the Sagyin Hill in 1865. The figures of 80 arahats or the disciples of the Buddha, are arranged around the central shrine, 20 on each side.

Mandalay Palace

The Mandalay Palace is a walled city within Mandalay originally built in 1861. The palace was completely destroyed during the war, save for the structure at the Shwenandaw Monastery. What stands on the original site is a faithful reconstruction of the original palace. Today, the pavilions and chambers of the palace and the Palace Museum are filled with throngs of tourists who come to visit for a glimpse into the grand culture and history of Myanmar.

Mandalay has a semi-tropical climate, but best visited from November to February when the weather is most pleasant.
