Languedoc-Roussillon is one of the 27 regions of the country of France. Languedoc-Roussillon comprises five departments, and also borders the other French regions of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, Rhône-Alpes, Auvergne, Midi-Pyrénées on the one side, and Spain, Andorra, and the Mediterranean on the other side.

Before the 20th century, Languedoc's spoken language is Occitan, while Catalan was the language spoken in Roussillon. Both languages have been under pressure from French. In the year 2004, a research was conducted by the Government of Catalonia where it showed that 65% of adults over the age of 15 years in Roussillon could understand Catalan, while 37% stated they were able to speak it.

The culture of Languedoc-Roussillon itself is rich; from its language to the sports of the region. Those who are more familiar with the region's culture can say that its literature, music, wine, and sports are all notable.

Musée Fabre - Located in Montpellier, the Musée Fabre was founded in 1825 by painter François-Xavier Fabre, and had a renovation costing €61 million, between 2002 and 2007. The Musée Fabre is a landmark museum that houses one of France's richest collections of European art. The galleries are split into three main sections namely Old Masters, Modern Movements, and Decorative Arts. The Old Masters include three paintings by Rubens, Venus and Adonis by Nicholas Poussin, and a collection of striking works by Jacques-Louis David. Modern Movements on the other hand, has a selection of Romantic paintings by Delacroix, Géricault, and Gustave Courbet, and a collection by very notable artists Manet, Degas, Delaunay, Frédéric Bazille, and Kees van Dongen. There are also ceramics, furniture,

faiences, and jewellery that can be found at the Decorative Arts section, all of which are housed in a former mansion that belonged to Madame Frédéric Sabatier d’Espeyran.

Pont du Gard – This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This place is exceptionally well-preserved, featuring a three-tiered Roman aqueduct that was once part of a 50km-long system of water channels built around 19 BC to bring water from nearby Uzès to Nîmes. Travellers who are going here should know that it is about a 400m walk. The place also provides wheelchairs to those who need assistance.

La Cité - The La Cité is located in Carcassonne is a medieval citadel. The citadel is located on a hill on the right bank of the River Aude, in the south-east part of the city proper. It used to be the historic city of Carcassonne and also features on the emblem of local rugby league team AS Carcassonne.

How to get around within Languedoc-Roussillon

Though there are buses and trains in the area, travellers all say that the best way to get around the region is by car. The trains are funded by the Regional Council and operated by SNCF, the national railway. However, travelling within the region is limited – services are infrequent, irregular, and generally do not operate late into the evenings. But with great planning, travelling by trains between the major towns and cities are a good option. There are buses operating in the region and are organised on a departmental basis. This means that they radiate from the major towns to the nearby smaller towns and villages. There are in general no inter-city buses connecting cities where there is train service available. These buses however are generally timed for work, schools, and shopping, making it hard to come across buses in the evenings and weekends.
