Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport is an international airport in Chiang Rai in northern Thailand. The airport is named after the King of Thailand’s mother, Princess Mother Somdet Yah. The airport is served by AirAsia, Nok Air and Thai Airways which operate regular flights to the capital, Bangkok. Currently, Chiang Rai International Airport only serves one international route. China Eastern Airlines operates thrice weekly flights to Kunming Changshui International Airport.
Chiang Rai International Airport is located about 10 kilometres from city centre of Chiang Rai. Transport options into the city are limited to taxis, hotel transfers and rental cars. You can opt for the pre-paid taxis that are readily available at the terminal, or walk to the main road outside the airport area to flag down a metered taxi.
Chiang Rai, the capital of Chiang Rai Province and located in Northern Thailand, is also considered the commercial hub of the region called the Golden Triangle. This refers to the border region of Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos. Chiang Rai is the ideal starting point for travelling around the region.
As a small provincial capital, you can travel around Chiang Rai by very convenient public transportation. Majority of public transport are the local tricycles called tuk-tuks and mini-buses called songthaews. The building is completely white with mirrored glass mosaics embedded in its distinctive façade. Wat Rong Khun is one of the most-visited temples in Thailand and is designated as a national landmark.
This expansive park belongs to Boon Rawd Brewery, Thailand’s biggest beer producer. It was originally developed to grow barley mainly for beer. With its beautiful landscape and interesting crops, it has grown to be a popular tourist attraction. The large plantation has a variety of fruit and crops such as para rubber trees, jujube fruits, barley fields, strawberries, mushrooms and vegetables.
The Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle refers to the region of Laos, Myanmar and Thailand where the Mekong meets the Ruak River. This area has long been known for the growing of opium, but today it is a major tourist centre showcasing its interesting history and the local Thai Lanna culture. The famous House of Opium museum here tells the history of the opium trade in the Golden Triangle. It has an enormous collection of opium pipes, weights and scales, and other drug paraphernalia.
