Basse-Normandie or Lower Normandy is a region of France bounded by Haute-Normandie region to the northeast, Centre regions to the southeast, Pays de la Loire region to the south, and Brittany region to the southwest. The region is divided into three departments; Calvados, Manche, and Orne, and comprised of the following cities; Bayeux, Cherbourg, Deauville, Falaise, Honfleur, Lisieux, Mont Saint Michel, Sallenelles, and the region capital, Caen.

Château de la Ballue - At the end of the Mont-Saint-Michel countryside lanes are the Gardens of La Ballue are among the most impressive gardens in 21st century France. There is a guided tour of the gardens with the owner for groups of ten or more people, but reservations must be booked in advance on their website. Those who wish to stay for a night or more may also book a room.

Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen - In the city of Caen is a fine arts museum, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Caen. It was established in the 19th century and was rebuilt in 1971. The museum covers an area of 64,583 square feet in which it features public collections that include contemporary art and Italian, Flemish, and French Renaissance artwork.

Parc Festyland - Festyland is a small family theme park in the Caen ringroad. Approximately 110,000 guests annually visit the park, features architecture and personalities from the 1066 era. Some of the rides in the park include the Drakkar Express, a roller coaster with cars designed like Viking ships, and the Bateaux les pentes vertigineuses du Piratak, a water slide on boats. There is a section of the park called Prehistyland which is dedicated to the prehistoric era.

Sainte-Catherine Church - The 15th century cathedral in Honfleur is the largest church in France that is made entirely out of wood. Its architecture is quite unusual, looking like two wooden-ships turned upside-down, and the woodwork is magnificent. The church is dedicated to Sainte Catherine of Alexandria.

Bayeux Tapestry - The famous tapestry is actually an embroidered cloth almost 70 metres long thought to have been made in England in the 1070s. It depicts roughly fifty scenes regarding William the Conqueror and Harold, Earl of Wessex, and the Battle of Hastings. It is now on display at the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Bayeux.

How to get around within Basse-Normandie

The bus and tramway network called Twisto is the way to go when going around Caen and its surrounding suburbs. Bayeux can be travelled on foot, while Honfleur is well served by taxis.

How to get to Basse-Normandie

The largest airport in Lower Normandy is Caen-Carpiquet Airport, the airport serving Caen. It is located in Carpiquet, roughly 6km west of Caen's city centre. Air France offers flights to the east-central France city of Lyon and to Paris, while Flybe has flights to London, at the London Southend Airport.

Deauville – Saint-Gatien Airport is the airport located 7km east of Deauville in the Calvados department. The airline CityJet operates to London, while Aegean Airlines, Air France, Air Malta, and Jetairfly offer seasonal flights to Crete in Greece, Montpellier, Malta, Costa del Sol and Mallorca in Spain, and Olbia in Italy.
