The economic hub of the sate of Gujarat, Ahmedabad is the sixth largest city in India. While it is generally known as a centre of business rather than a tourist destination, Ahmedabad also has its share of interesting sights and attractions well worth a visit. The city has a rich history dating from its beginnings as the centre of the Hindu kingdom of Karnavati in the 11th century. The ancient city fort which enclosed the old city still stands today and is one of Ahmedabad’s popular tourist spots. Today, the city remains an important hub with a bustling mix of industries such as textiles, chemicals, petroleum and information technology. The cityscape is vibrant blend of modern institutions, religious and historical structures.
Getting around Ahmedabad is fairly easy. The public bus system is extensive and is a very good way to see the sights around the city. There are two bus options, the local city buses and the newer, though less extensive, Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS). For shorter trips, it is also quite convenient and cheaper to take a rickshaw. These brightly coloured three-wheelers can be found almost everywhere in the city. Taxis are not as easily hailed from the streets. You can arrange for a taxi with your hotel or through online bookings.
Despite its modern amenities and sleek office building, Ahmedabad still offers a lot of interesting cultural attractions which make it a popular tourist destination. Here are some of the top attractions in the city that are a must in any itinerary--
The city’s most famous attraction is the Sabarmati Aashram. Located near Vadaj along the Sabarmati River, this landmark was once the residence of Mahatma Gandhi. It was from here where Gandhi began his epic Dandi March. Today, the aashram displays artefacts, paintings and archives of Gandhi’s teachings. The site also features a handicrafts centre, a handmade paper factory and a spinning wheel factory.
Sidi Sayed Mosque
Sidi Sayed Mosque is worth a visit for its beautiful screens. The intricately carved screens are prominently displayed in the mosque’s large semi-circular windows.
The ancient Bhadra Fort which once enclosed royal palaces and well-laid gardens of the old kingdom is another popular attraction. The most famous structure here is the temple of Bhadrakali and was built during the Maratha rule in 1411.
