The United States of America – more commonly known as just the United States, or USA – is a country that consists of 50 states as well as a federal district (Washington, D.C.). With a land area of more than 3 million square miles, the USA is one of the largest countries in the world by area and – with its population of more than 300 million – also one of the largest by population. It has the world’s largest national economy and is considered a global superpower.
With the extremely large land area, you can find all sorts of climates, landscapes and natural features within the USA – from hot, tropical Florida to snow and ice at Alaska, from mountains, volcanoes and forests to lakes, rivers and plains.
If you think about USA and one of the first things that come to mind is Hollywood, you should definitely get yourself to Los Angeles, the City of Angels. Do the Hollywood Walk of Fame on the Sunset Strip, go to the Madame Tussauds Hollywood museum for a look at wax sculptures of world-famous actors, or to Griffith Park for a selfie with the iconic Hollywood sign.
Other than that, New York City is probably next on the list of places to visit. The most populous city in the United States, New York is one of the most important hubs for arts and culture in the world and the inspiration behind countless songs, movies, poems and more. Watch a breathtaking live show on Broadway, witness the magnificence of the Empire State Building that the legendary King Kong once scaled, feel the neverending hustle and bustle of Times Square, and of course you cannot miss a photo opportunity with the awe-inspiring Statue of Liberty on Ellis Island.
If you still have time after all that, take a look at another place that is a source of great American pride – the Space Center Houston at NASA Parkway. It acts as the official visitor centre of the Johnson Space Center, which serves as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)’s centre for spaceflight activities. With the Space Center being home to numerous historical artefacts of the USA’s outer space activities, you get to check out – in real life – the cool space gadgets that were always shown in the movies. Some of the Center’s offerings include the Apollo 17 command module, the Lunar Rover (a space exploration vehicle that can move across the surface of the moon) and many more. Relive the nation’s great space adventures and tragedies, and have an in-depth understanding of what it’s like to be an astronaut by partaking in the Space Center’s regular activity, Lunch with an Astronaut.
But if American burgers and fries aren’t quite your thing, nothing’s stopping you from grabbing a flight to Rome instead for some authentic Italian pasta and a jaunt in the ruins of the empire that used to rule the world. Go to the massive Colosseum to witness the arena where gladiators used to fight to the death, drop a couple of coins at the Trevi Fountain for a chance at finding yourself an Italian love before finishing the day with some splendid pasta and pizza, done the way only the Italians can.
Looking for heavenly beaches? Then how about a flight to Santorini in Greece, a beautiful city with 4,000 years of history and some of the most spectacular islands in the world? Once there, soak in the amazing blue seas and gorgeous scenery, visit the beautiful Red Beach, and – for the more adventurous ones – check out the live volcano the islands are known for. In fact, the island group of Santorini itself is the active volcanic centre of the Hellenic Volcanic Arc in the south Aegean Sea.
But for koala lovers, sunny Sydney, Australia’s famous harbour city is waiting for you. The capital of New South Wales, Sydney is a stunning city full of natural beauty and sights. Take a walk along the Sydney Harbour National Park, go on a whale-watching expedition or just laze on the many white sandy beaches and while your vacation away.
