Bunia Airport is a public airport that serves the city of Bunia in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Located in the province of Orientale, Bunia is home to the headquarters of Ituri Interim Administration, an interim body established in 2003 that administers the region. Bunia also acts as the base of one of the largest United Nations peace-keeping forces in Africa, which is strategically situated in the city to easily address the conflicts. Bunia is sandwiched between Lendu and Hema of what is known as the Ituri Conflict. It was reported that during the Second Congo War, the city and district were the scene of much fighting, which resulted to a number of civilian deaths. At present, the situation has dramatically lightened up but the same can’t be said for the entire country.
Where to go
From Bunia, you can fly to the nearest destination, which is Beni in the province of North Kivu. The town is home to a market, an airport, and the Christian Bilingual University of Congo (UCBC), with an estimated population of about 102,624. The town is further divided into four municipalities called Beni, Bungulu, Ruwenzori, and Muhekera. The town may not have any significant monumental bearings but in compensation, the town has a number of United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or MONUSCO bases, established to monitor the peace process of the Second Congo War.
You can simply head to Bukavu City, the capital of South Kivu, which is a seemingly lost oasis in the middle of barren lands with constant conflicts. Bukavu is a beautiful city that offers a picturesque peninsula on Lake Kivu. You can also try kayaking along the five fingers that stretches into the lake, which is perhaps the closest thing you could get to experience nature while in the country. You should also visit the lowland gorillas located in Kahuzi Biega National Park, a protected area near the town.
Since Bunia Airport only serves domestic flights, it is advisable that you fly first into Goma International Airport in Goma, and then make a connecting flight to N'djili International Airport in Kinhasa, the main gateway and the largest of the four international airports in the Democratic Republic of Congo in order for you to reach other destinations in the world.
From N'djili International Airport, you can reach other nearby destinations such as Nairobi in Kenya, Luanda in Angola, and Johannesburg in South Africa. Situated on the Nairobi River, Nairobi derives its name from a water hole known in Maasai, or Eastern Nilotic language, as Enkare Nyirobi, which means cool waters. The name suits the city well, which grew to success due to the administration and tourism businesses which mostly consists of big game hunting. In Nairobi, visit the Mamba Village and get a chance to cradle a baby crocodile in your arms, or go atop the Kenyatta International Conference Center (K.I.C.C.) to get a view of the metropolis.
From N'djili International Airport, you can reach other long-haul destinations such as Casablanca in Morocco, or Istanbul in Turkey. Casablanca would be a good destination getaway with its endearing simple city sights. You should visit the Mahkama du Pacha, a Hispanic-Moorish building composed of 60 ornate rooms with delicately carved wooden ceilings. You can also opt to send postcards through the Central Post Office. You can also admire the building’s intricate artwork, which is composed of round and rectangular shapes. After a long day, treat yourself to Benis Patisserie, famed for having some of the best pastries and luxurious dish in Moroco. Take note that restaurants in Moroco doesn’t open until 7 p.m., so if you want to make arrangements beforehand, be sure to call first.
