Following the release of 2019’s official public holiday dates, Singaporeans are reminded to make full use of the remaining public holidays in 2018 for their vacations. To help travellers secure the best cost savings for flights, Skyscanner releases its annual Best Time to Book data today.
To score cheaper deals during long weekends such as Hari Raya Puasa on 15 June or by taking a day’s leave during Deepavali on 6 November, the best time to book flights to popular short-haul destinations such as Bangkok, Bali, Phuket and Hong Kong, is typically 23–25 weeks in advance. Kuala Lumpur and Manila emerge as the exceptions to this rule, with the best time to book being seven and 16 weeks in advance respectively.
Up to 31% savings for long-haul destinations
Skyscanner also looked at seven popular long-haul destinations, including New York, Paris, Honolulu, and Reykjavik. According to Skyscanner’s Best Time to Book data, travellers should book their flights 20-24 weeks ahead of their departure dates, in order to enjoy the best savings for these cities.
Some of the biggest savings are to be had on flights to Russia, which is set to host the FIFA World Cup in June and coincides with the Hari Raya Puasa public holiday on 15 June. Significant savings can also be made on trips to see Reykjavik’s famous Northern Lights during the Christmas holiday with flights at 16% cheaper when booked 24 weeks before departure.
Not so last-minute deals – book at least five weeks ahead
For travellers unable to book months in advance, Skyscanner’s data reveals prices go up 10% at four to six weeks ahead of departure, then more than 26% after that. It could even be +70% for certain destinations, so travellers should always try to avoid booking at the eleventh hour**.
Other Travel Planning Tools
Skyscanner’s Public Holiday Planner is an interactive tool that searches across airlines and online travel agencies to find the best flight deals over official public holiday dates. The tool automatically calculates how many additional days of leave users need to take for each trip, helping holidaymakers to plan smartly, and maximise their annual leave allowance.
Skyscanner’s Price Alerts tool is a handy way to keep track of price fluctuations. It provides an alert whenever prices creep up or hit a low point, allowing you to pounce when the price is right.
