Rainbow Valley Conservation Reserve is a scenic nature reserve, home to red coloured sandstone rock formations. The rocks are particularly spectacular at dawn and dusk and it’s possible to camp and spend the night there. Visitors will also find walking routes and, sometimes, ranger talks here.
Rainbow Valley is around two hours’ drive from Alice Springs Airport. Drivers should take the route 87 southwest through Hugh before turning left towards the reserve. A 4WD is recommended for the final part of the journey, which is more a track than a road.
Hermannsburg is an Aboriginal settlement first established as a Lutheran mission in the 1800s. It’s famous as the home of Aboriginal artist Albert Namatjira. Visitors can explore the town’s museum, gallery and the Kata Anga Tea Rooms, all set within original 19th century buildings.
It takes an hour and 30 minutes to travel from Alice Springs Airport to Hermannsburg. Drivers should first head up on route 87 to Alice Springs Town and then branch off west onto 2 and then route 6. The town of Hermannsburg is very small, set over just a few roads, so it’s very easy to find your way.
