Ho Chi Minh City Airport is located just 6km north of the centre of Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. It is the biggest airport in the country. Its smaller counterparts include Hanoi Airport, Da Nang Airport and Nha Trang (Can Ranh) Airport. Known also by the name “Tan Son Nhat Airport”, it is both a civil and military airport set up by the country’s French colonial rulers in the early 20th century. Later, the American powers helped to further establish and expand its infrastructure and facilities for the war that ensued in the mid-20th century. During the Vietnam War, the airport was used by both the United States and the South Vietnamese Air Force. Today, its 2 runways, 2-level arrival terminal and 2-level departure terminal help to facilitate passenger traffic of up to approximately 17 million every year (as of July 2014).
Ho Chi Minh City Airport’s Terminal 1 serves domestic flights such as Vietnam Airlines and VietJet Air. The former, Vietnam Airlines, is the country’s national carrier and offers flights to various areas in Vietnam. International carriers which frequent the airport are Singapore Airlines, as well as other renowned brands like Air France, Philippine Airlines, Thai AirAsia, Cathay Pacific, Malaysia Airlines and American Airlines.
In the airport, WiFi access is available at some of the cafes and eateries. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and currency exchange booths are also located outside the terminals for you to obtain or convert dongs, the local currency. Be sure to apply for and get your visa done upon your arrival at the airport if you are staying in Vietnam for beyond 30 days. However, it is advisable to complete your visa application before you travel because the procedures are not particularly streamlined or efficient at the airport, and receiving a confirmation might take some time.
Within the airport, you can walk between the terminals. Buses are only provided for transit passengers.
When travelling to the city from the airport, visitors should take note to only hire metered taxis that are officially approved and recognised by Ho Chi Minh City Airport. This is probably the safest way to get reliable transport, service and fair charges. Shuttle mini-van services are also available. If you have booked accommodation before arrival, check if a pick-up can be arranged.
