San Francisco International Airport

San Francisco International Airportis an international airport located 13 miles (21 km) south of downtown San Francisco, California. It has flights to points throughout North America and is a major gateway to Europe and Asia.

SFO is the largest airport in the Bay Area and the second busiest in California, after Los Angeles International Airport. In 2013, it was the seventh busiest in the United States and the twenty-second busiest airport in the world by passenger count. It is the fifth largest hub of United Airlines. It also serves as Virgin America's principal base of operations. It is the sole maintenance hub of United Airlines, and houses the Louis A. Turpen Aviation Museum.

The airport is owned and policed by the City and County of San Francisco, but is located in and entirely surrounded by adjacent San Mateo County. Between 1999 and 2004, the San Francisco Airport Commission operated city-owned SFO Enterprises, Inc., to oversee its business purchases and operations of ventures such as operating Honduran airports.

All passengers arriving on international flights and connecting to onward flights must complete U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) entry procedures at the International Terminal Arrivals Hall.

Passengers ending their journey at SFO should exit the Arrivals Hall through the doors marked ‘San Francisco’ for the International Arrivals Meeting Area and ground transportation options. Passengers transferring to a Domestic or Onward International FlightOnward should exit the Arrivals Hall through the doors marked "Connecting Flights".

A Connecting Baggage Desk, located directly outside the exit is available to recheck baggage tagged to its final destination.

The airport houses an eclectic mix of bookstores, gift shops, travel outfitters, designer brands and luxury boutiques. Many retailers are local, featuring authentic San Francisco souvenirs and merchandise for your last-minute purchases. San Francisco and the Bay Area are world-famous for local cuisine. Whether you want a quick snack before a flight or have time for a leisurely meal, you'll enjoy delicious choices at SFO. Nearly all the airport eateries are branches of local restaurants, bars and cafés, so you can get a real taste of San Francisco, no matter where you're heading next. And if you're in the mood for a manicure, facial, or massage, at SFO, you'll enjoy airport services that go far beyond the ordinary. Apart from all these there is a gamut of services like an aviation museum to help you pass the time, and the Berman Reflection Room and Christian Science Reflection Room for you to obtain some peace and quiet.

For business travellers, there is FREE WiFi throughout the terminals and Rental Car Center. Work stations located throughout the terminals provide a comfortable work area where laptops can be charged.

There are 3 major terminals at the airport and access to the airport is by an elaborate network of train, bus and cab service.

Some of the places to visit in the San Francisco area are The Mission District, Civic Center, Union Square, Chinatown and North Beach and other spots such as the South of Market & Yerba Buena.
