Penang International Airport, previously known as Bayan Lepas International Airport, is approximately 16km away from the city’s capital, Georgetown. The increasingly busy airport is also a key travel hub for tourists from major Southeast Asian cities. While the majority of the popularly used airlines are found here, budget airlines such as AirAsia and Firefly serve this airport as well. Catering to the needs of up to 6.5 million passengers every year, it has 2 runways for hundreds of international flights and even more domestic flights each week.
The airport’s terminals are situated in the same building. Travellers can find Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), as well as foreign exchange converter services and a bank in the main terminal building of the airport. WiFi access is provided for easy Internet surfing, making it convenient to contact family and friends, or plan your journey. Postal facilities are available should you wish to mail a postcard back home.
While Penang is known for its delicious street food, there are a few restaurants and stylish cafes in the airport serving Western food as well to satiate finicky palates and satisfy hunger pangs.
With duty-free shopping, even a short getaway is a worthwhile trip. You can also grab a newspaper or magazine from the multiple newsstands available, or stock up on medical necessities at the pharmacy. A first aid service is available in the terminal building. The disabled are also well looked after with toilets for wheelchair users, lifts up to the departure area on the first floor and reserved parking spaces in the car parks.
The airport is well-equipped for business travellers with a VIP lounge and business centre. Meetings and conferences can be held at Hotel Equatorial, which is connected to the airport via a free shuttle bus service.
There are no hotels at the airport. However, there is a wide range of accommodation available within reasonable distance. Hotel EST Penang or Xin Penang Apartment are less than 600m away from the airport. Other hotels less than 2km away are TH Hotel Penang, Fig Tree Hill Resort and D Awal Residence.
