Los Angeles International Airport

Originally known as Mines Field, the site of Los Angeles International Airport was once used as a general aviation field. When the Second World War broke out it was transformed for military use. Today it is the sixth busiest passenger airport in the world and the third busiest in the United States of America. It ranks 11th in air cargo tonnage handled.

In the early 1980s the airport added domestic and international terminals and a second-level roadway was built.

As the largest airport in California, it has seen millions of passengers pass through its gates every year, firmly consolidating its international credentials as an airport of global, consumer choice. International flights and connections alone accounted for more than half of total cargo handled.

The airport houses a staggering nine terminals plus an undisclosed number of runways. The central complex featuring the terminals is connected by a U-shaped two-level roadway and curbside baggage is available in the upper departure level.

Some of the latest brand names and exquisitely-styled restaurants featuring cuisines from diverse regions in the world can be found in the airport. For a light meal, visit Marmalade Café or Backlot Deli. Or treat yourself to a gourmet repast at Petrossian Caviar and Champagne Bar. There are also the ubiquitous fast-food restaurants.

Cocktail lounges, gift shops, newsstands, duty-free shops for international flights, restrooms, public telephones and business centres offer convenient services for travellers.

There are also other amenities such as a first aid station and telephones connected to hotels and motels. Complimentary WiFi is available in most public areas of the airport.

Frequent art exhibitions and installations featuring local and regional artists are held at the airport to provide travellers with cultural enrichment and something to do while waiting for a flight.

Free shuttle service is also provided between all terminals around the clock for passengers making connecting flights between terminal buildings.

There are many hotels around the airport which are displayed on the boards of all terminals in the airport.
